Peter Stevens is a legend in the automotive design community, known for his impeccable judgment that’s cast a huge influence across the industry over the years. With a career spanning several decades, Stevens has played a pivotal role in shaping and designing various iconic cars.

His career in automotive design began at Ford in the 1960s where he designed the Capri Mk2’s headlight design. He later joined Lotus, where he worked on the Esprit and front-wheel-drive Elan. However, it was his role as the Chief Designer for the McLaren F1 that turned him into a member of the car design elite.

Perhaps best known for the F1 and Esprit X180, Stevens also has been involved in the design of a number of iconic cars.

  • McLaren F1: Stevens provided the exterior styling and interior ergonomics for this carbon-fibre masterpiece, collaborating with engineering director Gordon Murray.
  • Lotus Esprit (X180 Redesign): He successfully updated the iconic 1970s Giugiaro design into a more organic, modern shape for the late 1980s.
  • Jaguar XJR-15: A limited-run supercar based on Jaguar’s Le Mans-winning race cars.
  • Lotus Elan (M100): The front-wheel-drive reboot of the classic Elan, which won the British Design Council Award.
  • Subaru Impreza WRC: He designed the championship-winning rally car liveries and worked on the road-going Impreza P1.
  • BMW V12 LMR: He was responsible for the exterior design and interior ergonomics of this 1999 Le Mans-winning racer.
  • MG Z-Series & Rover 75: While at MG Rover (1999–2005), he directed the styling for the ZR, ZS, and ZT models, as well as the rugged Rover Streetwise.
